Blue Ridge Parkway in the Fall

Blue Ridge Parkway in the Fall

October 02, 2015

Blue Ridge Parkways is located in Virginia. The 469 mile scenic drives end at the Great Smoky Mountains on the North Carolina and Tennessee border.  Skyline drive is the name of the road through the Shenandoah National Park.  It has been called America's most scenic highway.

If you like hiking, you can choose from 350 trails at many different experience levels.  There are some lodges and a few campgrounds for those interested in staying in the area.  You can visit historic sites including The Natural Bridge, Daniel Boone Native Gardens, Stonewall Jackson's house and the National D-Day Memorial.  There are plenty of attractions, for example at mile marker 291 you can zipline.  Just a mile away you can visit Valle Crucis Mast General Store which is one of the oldest continuously operating general stores in America built in 1883.  At mile marker 298 you can visit Dutch Creek Trails for a one hour trail ride by horseback.  Mile marker 305 is 2,500 acres called Grandfather Mountain.  It's a great place for a picnic and to see the Mile High Swinging Bridge.  You can see the beautiful Linville waterfall at mile marker 316.4. There are quaint restaurants along the way as well as shopping opportunities.

During the fall traffic does tend to move slowly, as you have drivers topping at frequent turnoffs for picture opportunities and to view take in the amazing scenery.
